Partner Success Stories
Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore
“Several years ago, we learned that many of the individuals served by the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore were disproportionately impacted by negative health outcomes, such as diabetes, hypertension and obesity. By utilizing a 'food as medicine' approach for working with individuals who seek food assistance, we were able to start transforming our charitable model in ways that would increase access to healthy, nutritious foods for vulnerable populations, as well as educate individuals about food preparation and eating habits that can help manage their diet-related health conditions. However, an effective screen and intervene approach in healthcare settings was essential to connecting individuals with the food and nutrition education resources we offer throughout the community at our Healthy Food Pantry Program sites, largely operated by faith-based and nonprofit organizations. The partnership with Optima Health has enabled our Foodbank to identify and connect people with the critical services they need to holistically improve their lives.”

Literacy for Life
“We are thrilled to expand the HEAL Program into more communities with the help of Optima Health. Low health literacy is a pervasive problem that can result in life-threatening complications for patients; however, with completion of this course, participants will be better able to access medical services and take control of their health with confidence.”

Urban Baby Beginnings
“Our partnership with Optima Health has enabled our organization to support expectant mothers and their families by providing full wrap around services. By decreasing the risk of isolation mothers sometimes experience when social support is not available and creating educational programs with a focus on empowering families to make informed decisions, our families are thriving. As a result of collaborative efforts, the communities we serve have been able to reduce adverse pregnancy and postpartum outcomes while ensuring that their babies are healthy and school ready. It takes a village to ensure that communities and their members are thriving. We are honored to be a community partner with Optima Health and together we will continue to make a difference.”

Our combined efforts are a wonderful display of compassionate care. Together, Optima Health and the BGCVA Food Network places smiles on faces and closes the gap on food insecurity while addressing the social determinants of health for many in Eastern Virginia communities and soon across our Commonwealth.”
