Renew Your Virginia Medicaid Coverage
You must renew your Virginia Medicaid coverage every year to keep your benefits. Starting in March 2023, Virginia will begin reviewing members’ health coverage to make sure they still qualify. However, you will not lose your Medicaid prior to April 30, 2023.
Your coverage may renew without you doing anything. If so you will receive a letter in the mail letting you know your health care coverage will continue.
If Medicaid does not have all information needed to renew your benefits, you will get a renewal form or a checklist to complete and return by a certain date. Please make sure Optima Health has your updated contact information so we can reach you. Members who do not complete the renewal form or checklist will not be eligible to keep their Medicaid health coverage.
Take these steps to make sure you stay covered.

Rejoining Medicaid After Your Coverage Ends
If you missed your chance to renew, you can return your information within 3 months.
If Virginia Medicaid doesn’t receive your form or checklist, your benefits will end for “failure to renew.” You will get a letter letting you know when your benefits will end. However, you will have 3 months after your coverage ends to return the form or checklist to Virginia Medicaid. You don’t have to reapply!
After the 3 months, you will need to reapply if you would like to see if you might be eligible for Medicaid coverage again.
It is very important that you return your paperwork, even if you think you may no longer qualify for Medicaid, for two reasons:
- you may be eligible for coverage you may be unaware of or other programs that provide limited coverage
- Virginia Medicaid may send your information to the Federal Health Care Marketplace to check if you are eligible for other low-cost coverage or the Advanced Premium Tax Credits
